Cats And Vegetables

I was surprised to find that my cat Featherstone Leigh likes vegetables, I didn’t think cats were supposed to like them. He sprang onto my plate when I was eating Cauliflower last night, I knew already that he was partial to Sweetcorn.

I was talking to my Veterinary Nurse neighbour, about the vegetable eating habits of my cat companion and she told me about the vegetables that some of her cats eat: One cat loves red peppers and can jump onto the counter and take away the whole thing, if she turns her back for an instant. Another of her cats likes potato peelings. Another cat eats whole tomatoes, if she leaves them out and one cat regularly eats broccoli.

As she said, the more cats you have the more you find out about them. She then proceeded to tell me a very useful bit of information about cats and tomato sauce. ’ Give a cat that won’t eat and needs its appetite stimulated, sardines in tomato sauce’. For some reason the cats will go big time for the sauce and have his or her appetite stimulated in the process. The fish will, in all probability, be left though. Quite a good tip to remember.

Vegetables Cats Should Avoid Eating

Avoid letting the cat eat Onions or Garlic because Onions contain a substance called N-propyl disulphide which destroys the cat’s red blood cells and causes a type of anemia. Garlic contains a similar substance.

Don’t let a cat eat Green Tomatoes, Green (raw Potatoes) as they are members of the Solanaceae family which includes Deadly Nightshade. These foods contain a bitter poisonous alkaloid called Glycoalkaloid Solanine, which can cause violent symptoms in the cat’s gastrointestinal tract. Ripe tomatoes are OK.

Cats And Milk

Nothing to do with vegetables, but this is another cat care tip I learnt from my neighbour. ‘Don’t give cats milk’, because many of them are lactose intolerant, which means that milk can make their stomachs upset and produce cramp and gassiness. Surprisingly, its better to give a cat cream, because there’s more fat and less lactose in it. Not too much cream too often of course, as I’m sure you don’t want an overweight feline around the house.
