Calico Cats We Love You

A Calico Cat is a very special type of cat; a Calico Cats is usually female and to find a male Calico is extremely rare.
A Calico Cat has patches of black, ginger and white fur and usually the more white there is in the fur, the larger and more distinct the patches of colour. If the ginger and black colours in the fur are mixed, the cat is called a Tortoiseshell. Tortoiseshell cats, are commonly known as ‘Torties’ and have very little or no white on them.
As well as having distinctive coloured fur, Calicos have very distinctive and colourful personalities and require distinctive cat care to boot. Slightly less strong in personality than a Tortoiseshell, they can be extremely feisty, strong willed, independent minded and possessive of their ‘human’. They are very often distinctly vocal cats and often make their presence known by the noises they make. Their strong character traits are summed up affectionately by the name of ‘tortitude’.
My veterinary nurse neighbour advised the vet she was working for at the Cat Hospital, to keep both a long haired and a Tortoiseshell Cat as pets. In this way the Vet would understand the unique problems faced by guardians of both these types of cat. For it is difficult to administer a pill, or give a potion to a Calico, its struggle all the way…..Read this very funny article on How To Pill A Cat its got music and pictures too and a Calico Cat.
My Calico Cat Sparkles is like a second skin to me. She talks a great deal and is extremely possessive of me. Although shy around other people and timid around other cats, she makes her presence known strongly and is easy to love.
I wrote a Hub Page about how Sparkles came into my life, the story is about a dog who reincarnates as a cat and is called The Story Of A Dog Called Mr Grumpy Enjoy!
